I got into fitness with one main goal in mind, to work with kids. My son and daughter both love working out with me and some days they motivate me. It is a great feeling to share this time with them and as my son is now 14, knowing I am teaching him proper form and appropriate exercises. My daughter who is now 6 creates exercises, she has a blast. Kids can hardly "play" anymore and if they don't find a love for exercise early on it's even harder to show them.

I have created fun workouts that parents can do WITH their kids, all the exercises have a "mini me" version and it's done in a fun way for both the parent and the child. Due to demand I also opened a kids only class. However as great of an idea as everyone said it was, why pay for day care when they can have fun and get exercise too, getting people has been like pulling teeth. The ones who tried it, LOVED it. But as I was at an event the other day where people can register for an assortment of activities the adults walked right past. My equipment had the kids trying to pull their parents over and at 1 time I had almost every child in the place laughing, smiling and doing exercise, but the parents went right to the tables they had planned, music, arts those types of things but they didn't see it, even with the kids "playing". I was ready to scream "you wonder why kids are obese?". In 6 years when those kids are getting fatter and have NO interest in fitness they will be trying to hire me to "help fix them" when they could have been encouraging it all along.

I hope that once some people realize how much the kids actually enjoy it that more will follow. Sorry ended up more of a rant, but I don't understand the hesitation, why wait until the are 12 and have eating disorders or Dispise fitness? Why not create a fun early learning environment?

Thank God. I'm a personal trainer at a YMCA and we recently got childcare in our Y. They are there NOT by accident. I was asked if I would be interested in doing a fitness time with them What an opportunity for ALL of us. In your own neighborhoods, bring back some of the OLD games that you all had played when imagination was KEY. Stick ball, kick the can, red-rover, hide and seek, tag, freeze tag, Mother May I, ring around the rosie, twirling, jump rope with twirling, hop-scotch, racing via feet, bike riding, hoola hoop.....what about swinging--I mean a playground. Go back to your youth for a visit and look at the equipment as a 'workout.' We mimmick many things on the playground IN our gyms. Thanks for listening. Cynthia

Excellent information! It is harder and harder to find healthy breakfast cereal. I feel that I am shopping at TOYS R US for food. The marketing stratagies that are uses to sell us candy for breakfast is overwhelming. I wish there was "truth in advertising". Thank you for putting together the facts clearly.

this is an awsome way to start children of all ages to stay fit and healthy. In a day care setting I believe it should be a must. I do it with my day care kids and they love it.

These are all great ideas! Teaching moderation is definitely the key, because if you don't let them have any candy, then they'll want it more or try and sneak it. Another good idea I've heard is to let them pick out a few of their favorite pieces of candy, and then buy the rest from them and have them pick out a book, toy, or piece of sports equipment. You can then donate the candy you've bought from them.

I think teaching the idea of moderation is so key. Educating about a balanced lifestyle approach is what our family lives by.
