this is an awsome way to start children of all ages to stay fit and healthy. In a day care setting I believe it should be a must. I do it with my day care kids and they love it.

These are all great ideas! Teaching moderation is definitely the key, because if you don't let them have any candy, then they'll want it more or try and sneak it. Another good idea I've heard is to let them pick out a few of their favorite pieces of candy, and then buy the rest from them and have them pick out a book, toy, or piece of sports equipment. You can then donate the candy you've bought from them.

I think teaching the idea of moderation is so key. Educating about a balanced lifestyle approach is what our family lives by.

I'm a big fan of the Candy Buy Back. There is a Children's Dentistry in my area that does it every year. You can find them here: http://bit.ly/olEB7l They pay $1 per pound.

GREAT article! LOVE Halloween - but the huge bag of candy is CRAZY! We love to buy the mini popcorn bags with Halloween design and my 4 year old hands out the mini playdoughs to her class. Everything comes with a cute Halloween design so it is fun!

Another great thing to keep in mind during Halloween and all of the candy consumption is the prevention of tooth decay and mouth disease at an early age. This year my son and I are collecting donations for America's Toothfairy : http://bit.ly/rj2K08 another great option to teach moderation and raise awareness about the leading preventable chronic childhood illness!

This is a very sensitive subject. I can certainly see the dangers for the child's future for sure. In a very extreme case I can see it doing some good but I feel that the child would have to be morbidly obese and the parents just completely disregard it and I have seen cases where the parents just don't seem to care about it. But then what about the emotional damage it could have on the child as a result?

It is a fact that children eat what their parents eat and I prefer the other options such as nutritional education and fitness intervention. But would it help? Would taking children away from their parents help??? It's hard to say.

I know I struggle with my own child but it's not through lack of effort or setting a good example, that's for sure.
